Hildur "Gert" (Nicolai) Shields

August 24, 1928 ~ February 7, 2021 (age 92)


Richmondville-Hildur (Gert) Gertrude Nicolai Shields, 92, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 7, 2021 with her loving family at her side.  She was born August 24,1928, Jersey City, NJ to Anton and Hildur (Johnson) Nicolai.

Gert attended Lincoln High School, Jersey City. As a teenager she trained as a switchboard operator in Jersey City apartment buildings and was then employed as Trainer and Supervisor by New Jersey Bell. She married Lawrence R. Shields on October 25, 1947 in Saint Aloysius Church, J.C, NJ.  

She and Lawrence operated a private transportation company for The Bergen School in Jersey City. In 1976 upon her husband’s retirement from JCPD they moved to Richmondville, NY, where they purchased a package liquor store, Shields Liquor, which they ran until 1986. She then worked for Cobleskill Hospital and The College of St. Rose as Receptionist and Switchboard Operator.

Gert enjoyed traveling, church suppers, and reading on her porch. She loved good grammar & a full vocabulary. She was an advocate for all children.

She is predeceased by her husband Lawrence R. and her son Lawrence F. Shields.

She is survived by her sister Laura Nicolai Henzler of Schoharie, NY, children John L. (Jean) Shields of New Castle, NH, Michael W. (Janet) Shields of Maplewood, NJ, Gertrude H. Shields of Easton, PA, Margaret (Chris) Duffy of Easton, PA, and Kathleen (Bob) Johnson of Richmondville, NY, daughter-in-law Barbara Shields-Del Vecchio of Hardeeville, SC. Grandchildren include Lawrence F. Shields, Jr., Andrew and Kylie Shields, Thomas and Brian Shields, David and Lauren Francavilla, Grace Cooley, Jack Duffy, Emily, Morgan, and Avery Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Richmondville, NY or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A private graveside service will be held May 22, 2021 at Richmondville Rural Cemetery.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.
