Richmondville- Gregory M. Thomas, 66, formerly of Richmondville, passed away on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at the St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehab Center where he had been a resident for the last two years. His long battle and struggles with Parkinson’s Disease are finally over.
Greg was born August 18, 1954 in Stamford, CT and grew up in Darien, CT, and was a 1973 graduate of Darien High School. He graduated in 1978 from Sacred Heart University with a B.S. in Business Administration and a concentration in Marketing. Greg had a long and varied career, starting in auto parts sales with a number of dealers in CT, moving to an estate caretaker position for a widow in Wilton, CT, then a satellite TV installer, a supervisor for a Sears subcontractor installing new/revamped Sears electronics departments, an employee for New York State providing solutions to aid seniors as well as the handicapped, and finally Visiting Nurses Association of Schoharie County.
He was an avid bowler, participating in many leagues as a younger man and proudly added perfect 300 score to his record. A love for fishing allowed him to travel throughout CT, NY and MA searching for the best fishing sites. In his early college years, he claimed to be an amateur mechanic loving to work on his Super Beetle, 1960 Karmen Ghia, and his Camper Bus. He had an affinity for Subaru, but his favorite was the Jeep Cherokee of which he owned 6-7 during his lifetime.
Greg married Michele Barton on October 8, 1983 and lived in CT until 1999, when they relocated to Summit Street in Richmondville, NY. As a parent, he was involved with numerous activities with his children including Little League, Scouting, and 4H. He was good natured with a great sense of humor and will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Left to cherish the memories of his lifetime are his wife, Michele; his children: Gordon G. Thomas and his wife, Megan (O’Dowd) Thomas and their newborn baby, Emma K. Thomas of Webster, MA ,and Sarah (Thomas) Broadwell and her husband, Ben Broadwell and granddaughter, Tess Marie Broadwell of Cobleskill, NY. Greg is also survived by his sister, Karen Osuch of Summit, NY, and brother Edward J. Thomas, Jr., also of Summit, NY.
As per the family’s request, Mr. Thomas’ remains will be cremated and a memorial service will be scheduled in the next few months. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to either Residents Council or Disadvantage Funds, St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 7 Timmerman Ave., St. Johnsville, NY 12452.
