David Aaron VanDerwerken, 77, of Lincolnton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021, at Atrium Health – Lincoln.
Born July 3, 1943, in Schoharie County, N.Y., he was the son of the late Donald Edgar VanDerwerken and Virginia Ottman VanDerwerken. He was also preceded by his only sibling, Donald Edgar VanDerwerken Jr.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Patricia M. VanDerwerken; daughter, Colleen Lodge (Jeff) of Scotia, N.Y.; sons, Kenneth D. VanDerwerken (Kari) of Charlotte, and Todd VanDerwerken (Denise) of Cobleskill, N.Y.; grandchildren, Sara Evans (Michael) of West Jefferson, Zack Schaffer (Karen), of Middleburg, N.Y., Michelle VanDerwerken of Charlotte, Kenneth J. VanDerwerken of Charlotte, Mitchell VanDerwerken, Cobleskill, N.Y. and Alec VanDerwerken, Cobleskill, N.Y.; and three great-grandchildren, Danny, Harmony and Leo of Middleburg, N.Y.
David was a graduate of Cobleskill Central School and a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1962 to 1964. Following his years of service, David returned to his hometown of Cobleskill, N.Y., and worked at General Electric in Schenectady, N.Y. in their turbine division. David also worked as a truck driver for Beacon Feeds in Central Bridge, N.Y., and an artificial inseminator in Unadilla, N.Y. David again returned to Cobleskill, N.Y., and worked until retirement as an independent contractor providing trucking, paving and handyman services. He was also a school bus driver for the Cobleskill Central School system.
David was a true believer in giving back to the community and was involved in many volunteer activities, including scouts, sports booster club, the American Legion, and his beloved ELKS Lodge. David was a member of the ELKS for over 40 years and served in every officer role, multiple times, including the Exalted Ruler three times. He was also deeply honored to serve as Vice President of the New York State ELKS.
Upon retiring, David moved with his wife to Lincolnton, where he became an active and devoted member of the McKendree United Methodist Church. He also transferred his ELKS membership from Cobleskill to Newton, and brought his years of experience and sense of humor to the brothers and sisters of his new home lodge.
Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation to be held from 1PM to 3PM on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at the Elks Lodge, 152 Legion Drive, Cobleskill, where an Elks service will be held at 2PM. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
