Cobleskill-Amy Ruth Nissen, 94, passed away on January 20, 2021, at St. Peter’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
Amy was born in the Bronx on December 1, 1926, to Gustav Neels and Matilda (Hittorff) Neels, but the family moved to Kent, Connecticut when she was young. She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School in Kent in 1944. In 1948, she graduated from the University of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, VA, with a degree in physical education. She taught physical education and other subjects for many years.
On July 2, 1955, Amy married Arne Nissen and in 1958, they purchased a dairy farm they named Angard Farm, which they operated until 1992. Farming is a demanding occupation and Amy and Arne worked hard to make the farm a success, winning many awards for dairy production. While farming, Amy was very active in the Schoharie County Farm Bureau. She was a long-time member of the Schoharie Valley Garden Club, winning awards for her flower arranging. Amy’s membership in the Carlisle Presbyterian Church meant a lot to her, and she spoke fondly of her church friends. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Amy was a caring and generous person with a big heart and an infectious laugh. Her family meant the world to her and she gave often and freely of her time to them. She had a flair for interior design and gardening, loved to sing, and had a passion for geology, amassing a collection of beautiful and unusual rocks.
In addition to her parents, Amy was predeceased by her husband, Arne Nissen; son, Norman Nissen; and sister, Marie Camp. She is survived by her son, Steven Nissen (Valatie, NY); daughter-in-law, Janice Nissen (Nassau NY); grandson, Samuel Nissen (Albany NY); and granddaughter, Abigail Nissen (Brighton, MA). Also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Lou Nissen (Holland, MI); nephews: Jens Ole Nissen (Denmark); William (Brenda) Camp (Myrtle Beach, SC); and Frank (Amanda) Nissen (Troy NY) and by nieces: Dianne (Phillip) Lang, Kent CT, and Eva Marie (Wade) Gugino, Holland MI.
