William Baskerville Brewster aka Kountry
Of Glenville and Summit
Born April 26th, 1949, in Brooklyn to Edward T. Brewster and Martha Marie Baskerville Brewster. Predeceased by his parents and his sister, Lee (Leona) Brewster Chon.
Kountry alternated his growing up years between his parents’ home in New York City and his grandparents’ in Summit, giving him a wide range of experiences. He graduated from John Bowne Agricultural High School in Queens, where he was on the rifle and fencing teams. Over his lifetime, Kountry worked as a farmer’s hired hand, trucker’s helper, chauffeur, torpedoman, busdriver, USPS mail handler, and goat farmer.
Kountry served fourteen years in the US Navy, crossed the equator six times and sailed all seven seas, mostly below the surface on submarines.
He kept busy in his spare time kayaking, sailing, practicing archery, and RVing through 48 states. Kountry was always ready to volunteer in his community and served as a local homeschool support group leader and merit badge counselor for BSA troop 15, Richmondville, where he was known for his prowess in knot tying- with both his fingers and his toes. Kountry was active in his church, teaching Sunday School and helping with maintenance tasks, even when he had to lay his crutches aside to man a rake.
Most recently, Kountry was known as that always friendly and welcoming face, the man of many stories, and the go-to tech guy for the theater just around the corner from his apartment at the Summit at Glenwyck. He will be greatly missed by his friends and neighbors.
Survived by his wife, Sandra Smith Brewster of Glenville, sons, Mykah of Summit, NY and Jerah of Boulder, Colorado and cousins William Baskerville (Janice), Donna Heassler (Jonathan) and Marianne Hilliard as well as numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.
A memorial service with luncheon to follow will be held on November 13th at 11 am at Faith Bible Church, 106 Crosby Road, Sprakers, NY 12166.
Donations in memory of Kountry can be made to Faith Bible Church.
