William Vines
West Nyack- William E. Vines, 90, formerly of West Nyack, died peacefully on Thursday, January 3, 2013 at his daughter's residence in Summit, NY where he had resided since 2010.
Born June 29, 1922 in Clayville, NY, he was a son of Christopher and Frances (Barnes) Vines. Bill moved from Clayville to West Nyack at the age of 13 and was a graduate of the former Congers High School.
From 1942 to 1996 he was Sr. NYLIC at NY Life Insurance Company and then he was a self employed financial consultant for several years.
Active in his community, Bill was a member of the Clarkstown Reformed Church for 77 years and had served as both a deacon and elder. He was also a member of the Rockland County Masons, Lions Club, Rotary, where he served as past district governor and assisted with Little League. He was the founder of the West Nyack Library, served on the Keep Rockland Beautiful Committee and was a member of S.H.A.R.E.
Bill was the Democratic County Chairman from 1955 to 1959, Justice of the Peace for Clarkstown from 1959 to 1969, served as Town Supervisor from 1969 to 1973 and was also a Rockland County Legislator.
Survivors include his four children: Susan (Dennis) Duffy of Summit, NY, Christi "Prin" (Robert) Kemmer of Summit, NY, William E. Vines, Jr. of Port Orange, FL, and James C. Vines of Fishkill, NY; and seven grandchildren: Patrick, Kevin, and Morgan Duffy, John Fournier, Robert Kemmer III, Kristen and William Vines.
He was predeceased by three brothers: Wesley, Henry, and James Vines; six sisters: Virginia, Rachel, Marion, Margaret, Eleanor, and Carolyn; and one grandson: Dennis William Duffy.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at the West Fulton United Methodist Church with Rev. Neil Irwin officiating. Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation to be held Sunday from 3 to 5 PM and Monday, 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Spring interment will be in Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, Clayville, NY.
