Cobleskill- William S. Townsend, 78, of Lawyersville Road, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Otsego Manor following a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born May 9, 1934 in Pepperell, MA, he was a son of William Seymour and Evelyn (Marshall) Townsend, Sr.
A dedicated diary farmer all of his life, Bill loved nothing more than being on his tractor and milking his cows. In his younger days, never one was afraid of hard work. Bill worked a second job at the Leatherboard as a paper-maker in Groton, MA. Bill and his wife, Hilda, purchased the Kroenke farm in Lawyersville in December 1970, where he and his family farmed until Bill retired approximately ten years ago. When he retired from farming, Bill also drove school buses for the Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School district, from where he finally retired.
Bill became a member of the Lions Club International while living in Massachusetts. He continued his dedicated services and works with this organization with the Cobleskill Lions Club and maintained his membership throughout his life. As a Lion, Bill served as Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, and President and received awards including, "Lion of the Year", and "The Distinguished Service Award".
Bill is survived by his wife, Hilda Townsend, whom he married August 6, 1955; three children: Donna Fava and her partner Bill Hoffman of Washington, DC, Jeffrey Townsend of Cobleskill, and William B. Townsend and his wife Dawn (Slater) of Cobleskill; five sisters: Geraldine Forrest of Pepperell, MA, Jean Patten of Ashby, MA, Marian Charpentier of Warrenton, VA, Kathy Rossbach of Townsend, MA, and Sheila Wyman of Groton, MA; seven grandchildren: Edwin W. Fava III, Katie (Fava) Hamm, Nicole Townsend, Eric Townsend, Renee Townsend, Jeremy Townsend, and Melissa Townsend. Bill is predeceased by two half-siblings, Donald Townshend of Halifax, Canada, and Irene Hammond of Groton, MA.
Family and friend's were at the center of Bill's life. A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, May 18, 2012 at the Townsend residence, 725 Lawyersville Road, Cobleskill with Rev. Jared Van Wagenen IV officiating. A picnic with some of Bill's favorite food and drink will immediately follow, and you are welcome to bring a covered dish to pass. Interment will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, Pepperell, MA.
