Middleburgh-Willard "Bill" D. Shafer, 81, of Clauverwie, died Tuesday, February 20, 2007 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
He was born January 3, 1926 in West Fulton, the son of Charles W. and Emma (Cole) Shafer.
Bill was a lifelong area resident and retired from Hertz-Penske in Albany where he was a diesel mechanic. He was secretary for the union at the motor repair plant in Central Bridge where he was employed for 25 years. Bill also served as president of the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley for nine years. At one time he was an advisor for the Boy Scouts. He was an avid camper, boater and outdoorsman.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Frances (Collins) Shafer who died in 1980, a sister, Thora Herman, and his brother, Harold Shafer.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Shirley (Osterhout) Shafer, a daughter, Linda (Jay) Young of Morrisville, PA; a son, Roger (Linda) Shafer of Central Bridge; 2 step-daughters: Mary Baird of Duluth, GA and Pamela (Ronald) Pier of Milford, NY; 6 step-sons: Terry Baird of Duluth, GA, David (Laura) Baird of Middleburgh, Dennis (Brenda) Baird of Marietta, GA, Brian Baird of Gallupville, Timothy Baird of Coventry, RI, and Randy (Po) Baird of Bushnell, FL; a sister, Carol Jane Miller of Charlotteville, NY; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 24, at Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home 134 River St. Middleburgh. Officiating will be his nephew, Rev. Alan Miller of Richfield Springs Bible Church. Friends may call from 1 to 3 PM on Sat. at the funeral home. Spring interment will be in Breakabeen Cemetery.
