Summit- Walter VanValkenburgh, 77, formerly of Summit, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.

Mr. VanValkenburgh was born June 1, 1931 in Summit, the son of Herbert and Ruth (VanTyle) Van Valkenburgh.

He was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict from 1952 until 1954 when he received an honorable discharge.

Mr. VanValkenburgh made a career of truck driving, and while living in Summit he was employed at Beacon Feeds in Cobleskill. He was a former fire chief for both the Summit and Jefferson Volunteer Fire Departments. A resident of Summit most of his life, Mr. VanValkenburg moved to North Carolina in the 1980's.

Survivors include his son: Mark VanValkenburgh of Willow Spring, NC; his daughter: Bonnie Gunkel of Elsmere, KY; two brothers: Robert VanValkenburgh and Richard VanValkenburgh, both of Summit; his sister, Sylvia Rivenburgh of Hudson, NY; three grandchildren: Amanda Lemon, Macy Clark, and Clint Cole; and two great-grandchildren: Joshua L. VanValkenburgh, and Annabell Lemon.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 6, 2009 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill. Friends are also invited to a period of visitation on Sunday from 6 to8 PM at the funeral home. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery with full military honors.
