Cobleskill- Walter Charles Kieru passed away peacefully at home on May 2, 2010 with his loving family by his side.
Born October 19, 1933 in Schenectady, he was the eighth child of Stanley and Frances (Sawicka) Kieru.
Walter was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict from 1953 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1955.
He retired from General Electric in Schenectady where he was employed as a plumber-steamfitter. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, St. Joseph's Athletic Club, and a charter member of the Scotia-Glenville Elks.
He enjoyed golf, bowling, and fishing (especially in Canada) and traveling with his wife. Walter was a devoted family man and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his loved ones and his many friends. He had a zest for life and was known for his entertaining stories and his endless jokes.
Walter was also a music lover, in particular, Polish music. He and his wife resided in the Scotia-Glenville area for forty years and moved to Cobleskill approximately five years ago.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Kazmierczak) Kieru; a daughter: Kathryn (Paul) Halloran of Wasilla, AK; a son: Vincent (Rosanna) Kieru of Cobleskill; four grandchildren: Michael Foy of Wasilla, AK, Melissa Foy (James Hettrick) of Big Lake, AK, Laura Kieru of Cobleskill and Mathew Kieru of Cobleskill; four great-grandchildren: Regan Foy of Houston, TX, Jordan Hettrick of Big Lake, AK, Dillon Hettrick of Big Lake, AK, and Olivia-Rose Kieru of Cobleskill; two sisters: Irene Pyzanowski of San Antonio, TX, and Victoria Rogalski of Schenectady; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 138 Washington Ave., Cobleskill with Father Thomas Holmes as celebrant. Friends will be received at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill from 6 to 8 PM on Wednesday, May 5. Burial with full military honors will at 1:00 PM on Thurs., May 6, at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank You" to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care for their loving, tender care while Walter was ill.
