Richmondville- Vincent J. Tompkins, 80, of 402 Main Street, died Monday, October 13th at home, surrounded by his beloved family.

Vincent was born October 30, 1928 in New York City, the son of William and Marion (Gilmore) Tompkins. He was a United States Navy Veteran, serving from 1946 until 1949 when he was honorably discharged. For many years he was a carpenter, employed by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local 11.

Mr. Tompkins spent many years renovating houses. In 1958 he renovated a carriage barn in Brewster, NY, which became the family home for 20 years. He proudly served as a member of the Brewster Fire Department and the Garry Owen Cadets. His creative carpentry skills always kept him busy. In 1990 he converted a sugarhouse in Stamford, NY into a home, affectionately known by the family as the Sugar Camp, where they resided for fourteen years prior to moving to Richmondville in 2005. Vincent had a voracious interest in reading, especially westerns and history. He spent many enjoyable hours conversing with friends and family over coffee.

While living in Stamford, he volunteered at the C.O.R.E. Values Thrift Shop with his wife Jean. He was a member of the Stamford Golf Club and sang with the Midstatesmen barbershop group in Oneonta as well as line dancing in Jefferson.

He was predeceased by two brothers: William P. Tompkins and Gerald Tompkins; and a grandson, Christopher Daniel Tompkins of Waldoboro, Maine.

Survivors include his wife, Jean (Milliot) Tompkins of Richmondville, whom he married October 28, 1950, in Brewster, NY. Three daughters: Louise Burgess and her husband Leon (Lee) of Dover Plains, NY, Kathleen Puciato and her husband Thomas (Vito) of Summit, NY, and Jean Savarese and her husband Lester (Buddy) of Summit, NY; two sons: Daniel Tompkins and his wife Alice Elliott of Richmond, ME, and Vincent Tompkins of Richmondville; a sister, Janet Crawford and her husband Wayne of San Antonio, TX; a brother, Eugene Tompkins and his wife Joyce of Palm Coast, FL; a sister-in-law Susan Kirby and her husband Eugene of Glen Ellyn, IL; six grandchildren: Clair Puciato of Oneonta, NY, Julia Puciato of Summit, NY, Marianne Miller of Lake Katrine, NY, F. Samuel Lee of Chanute, Kansas, Amanda Tompkins of Washington, Maine and Kyle Tompkins of Richmond, Maine; as well as 9 nieces, 7 nephews, 5 step-grandchildren and 13 great step-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held Thursday, October 16th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 am, Friday, with Rev. Pam Mikel Hayes of the Cobleskill United Methodist Church officiating. Burial at Stamford Cemetery will follow the service.
