Cobleskill- Mrs. Verda M. Van Alstine, 103, of Jay St., died Sunday, August 8, 2010, at her residence.
She was born July 8, 1907 in Rensselaer, and was the daughter of Vernon and Susan (Vedder) Shufelt.
Verda spent most of her younger years in Rensselaer before moving to Clinton Heights, NY. She was a graduate of Rensselaer High School and attended Mary Steiglemier Business School in Albany, NY. She worked for Winthrop Chemicals and Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselaer with twenty-eight years of service in accounting.
Verda had been a member of the Clinton Heights Congregational Church and was a deacon and secretary before moving to Carlisle, NY in 1980. She then became a member of the Carlisle Senior Citizens.
She was the wife of the late Chauncey D. Van Alstine, who predeceased her on Feb. 7, 1998.
Survivors include her cousins: Clayton Shufelt of Windsor, CT, Susan (Jerry) Stenson of Delmar, NY, and Steven Schermerhorn of Clifton Park, NY; and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 9:00 AM on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with the Rev. Carol Coltrain of Huntersland United Methodist Church officiating. A committal service will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, at Warners Cemetery, Warners, NY. There will be no calling hours.
