Vera Alford

Stamford: Vera C. Alford, 86, formerly of Schenectady and Albany, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta following a brief illness. Most recently, she resided at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, NY

Vera was born in West Fulton, NY on February 14, 1925 to the late Della (Swart) and Wallace English.

She graduated from Middleburgh Central School in 1937 and was the Salutatorian of her class.

Vera worked as a secretary at the New York State Dept. of Taxation and Finance in Albany and lived most of her adult life in the Schenectady and Albany area.

In her younger years, she enjoyed hiking and conquered Mount Washington, Whiteface Mountain and several others.

She was a member of the Emmaus United Methodist Church in Albany and did volunteer work there and was a member of the church's senior citizen's group.

Vera also helped raise funds and volunteered for the City Mission in Albany.

She enjoyed spending time at the Swart Family Farm in West Fulton and kept close ties with the West Fulton United Methodist Church and the West Fulton Community.

Besides her parents, Vera was predeceased by her companion of many years, Donald Flynn.

She is survived by her sisters: Elsie Rogers of Warnerville and Muriel Swanberry of North Billerica, MA. and by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with Rev. Neil Irwin officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to the held at the funeral home prior to the service from 12 to 1 PM. Spring interment will be in Breakabeen Cemetery, Breakabeen.
