Schoharie- Thelma Moore Serrie was born July 2, 1918 in the Town of Gilboa, NY and died February 8, 2013 in Cobleskill, NY after a brief illness. She was the daughter of David Birdsley and Belle Traver Moore. As a graduate of Gilboa Central School, Mrs. Serrie received a BS in music education from Ithaca College and an MA in music education from Columbia University. Thelma was a vocal music teacher at Middleburgh Central School for 34 years. After retiring in 1973, Thelma worked as a substitute teacher for another 25 years, gave private piano and voice lessons and cared for her grandchildren.
Active in church, teachers' and women's clubs. Thelma held local, regional and state offices. She adjudicated All State solo and NYSSMA competition. Her high school mixed choir received several A6 ratings. Mrs. Serrie was a loved and respected teacher. Throughout her lifetime, Thelma was a Christ follower and an active member of several area churches, played piano for a praise team and conducted 6 ecumenical cantatas.
Mrs. Serrie was predeceased by her husbands, Walter Mueller in 1955, John Serrie in 1980 and Richard Turrell in 2007 and a son, John Serrie in 2000. She is survived by her children: Shirley (Cliff) Gridley of Fort Myers, FL, Pat Mesibov of Cobleskill, Sara Auserehl, Robert Mueller, and Lin (Bill) Lowden all of Schoharie, Jean Wilhelmsen of IN, Charles (Anita) Serrie of Gilboa, and Anne (Richard) Kuhn of Jefferson; 25 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.
Thelma's love for her community and the Schoharie Valley is reflected in the numerous contributions she made to Historical Society meetings and publications. In her last days, Thelma remembered most fondly singing with children, participating in area bible studies and recalling memories of her family and friends.
Calling hours will be Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 10 AM to 12 PM at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, immediately followed by a Memorial Service. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Breakabeen Cemetery.
