Stephen Paul Lorence, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Margaretville Residential Care Center after a long illness.
Steve was a loving family man who was supported and cared for by his family. He was determined not to allow his illness to diminish his great love of life and nature. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to share his knowledge of fishing, hunting, boating and farming. Steve was known by many for his charismatic personality, positive outlook, and love of adventure.
Steve worked for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation for over 30 years, retiring in 2011 from his position as Regional Manager in Albany, N.Y. He also served as the Fisheries Manager in Stamford and the Freshwater Wetland Manager on Long Island. Steve also enjoyed serving on the Fisheries and Wildlife Advisory Committee for SUNY Cobleskill.
He was born on December 13, 1952 in Johnstown, N.Y. to Richard Lorence and Pauline Skoda Lorence. He graduated from Johnstown High School. He continued his higher education at SUNY Cobleskill, graduating with his Bachelor's degree from Cornell University. A resident of Cobleskill for 20 years, Steve loved the rural setting of Schoharie County. He previously lived on Long Island in the town of Port Jefferson Station.
Steve married his beloved wife, Christine Trepiccione, on September 30, 1995, in Centereach, N.Y. Steve and Christine enjoyed 28 years together.
Steve is predeceased by his parents, and his son, Stephen Paul Lorence Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife, Christine A. Lorence; children, Elizabeth Lorence, Ro Lorence, and Michael Lorence; siblings, Richard Lorence, Patricia Lorence, Mary Beth (Richard) Blessing , and John (Nadine) Lorence; and his in-laws, Elpidio (Eva) Trepiccione, Lori (Brian) Kelly, Karen (Marc) Werner, Michael Trepiccione; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends and family can pay their respects on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at Mereness-Putman Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, N.Y.
