COBLESKILL- Stella Marie Abenanty, 78, of Union Street in Cobleskill, died at her daughter's house after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Abenanty was born October 17, 1928 in Pottstown, PA and was the daughter of George and Mathilde (Hollrotter) Laubmeier
Stella grew up on a farm in Morris, NY that her parents bought when they moved to the United States from Germany. She worked driving teams of horses , raking hay, and hand milking the cows. Her first job off the farm was working in a prestigious hotel in Vermont where she was exposed to waiting on the upper echelon of John Jacob Astor.
She moved and settled in the Oneonta area where she met and married Arthur Abenanty in 1950, began psychology courses and obtained her degree from State University College of Oneonta. She taught at Laurens Central Schools, mainly second grade, for 23 years and moved to the Cobleskill area in 1985. Stella was active in Summit Seniors, Young at Heart, Cobleskill Bowling League, and the Elks and Moose Clubs, as well as quilting, reading, watching sports and loved to gamble.
Mrs. Abenanty is survived by two daughters; Linda Kolnick of Fultonville, NY and Nancy (Robert) Barker of Liberty, SC, three grandchildren, Kelly M. Kolnick of Esperance, Bryan and Keri Barker of Liberty, SC, one sister, Erna L. Barton of Jacksonville, FL, one sister-in-law, Chloe Laubmeier of Morris, NY; two nephews, Michael and James Laubmeier of CT and one niece, Christine Wood of CT.
A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, August 22 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY with Sister Connie James officiating. The public may call from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon prior to the Funeral Service. Burial will follow at Hillington Cemetery, Morris, NY
