Cobleskill- Sofia Makar, 86, of Barnerville Road, died Sunday, September 28, 2014, at Palatine Nursing Home in Palatine Bridge, where she had been a resident for a brief time.
Born November 15, 1927 in Ukraine, the daughter of Stanislaw and Eva (Oleksandrivna) Haleszyn.
Sofia lived in New Jersey most of her adult life and worked in housekeeping at Prudential Life Insurance Company.
Family brought her the most pleasure in life, while her hobbies included embroidering, knitting afghans, and playing bingo.
She married Stefan Makar on August 27, 1949 and he predeceased her in 1992. It was then that she moved to this area to be near her children.
Survivors include her two daughters: Orysia Parente of Cobleskill, Irka Makar of Carlisle and her companion, Stephen Bodnar, who was also a close friend to Sofia; her son: Roman Makar of Cobleskill; granddaughter: Taisa Parente of Mountainville; and her sister: Dominia of Ukraine.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at St. Andrews Ukrainian Catholic Church, 141 Sarah Wells Trail, Campbell Hall, NY. Burial will be in Holy Spirit Cemetery. A repass will follow in the church hall.
