Schoharie-Samuel F. Crewell, 76, of Sunnyside Road, died Friday, June 21, 2013 at Capstone Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in Amsterdam where he had been a resident for the past five years.
Born May 27, 1937 on the family farm in Cherry Valley, he was a son of Vaughn S. and Loretta (Whiteman) Crewell. Sam began working on various dairy farms as a youngster, at age eleven. In 1955, he purchased his first truck from George Sheldon, thus starting his career in buying and selling hay. Operating Sam's Trucking for numerous years, he was a member of OOIDA (Owner Operator Independent Drivers Assoc.). Later his brother, Vaughn, joined partnership and created Crewell & Sons.
Sam was also a veteran of the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge in March of 1963.
Along with his parents, Sam was predeceased by his wife, Edna (Tiedemann) Crewell and siblings: Doug Crewell, Ted Crewell, and John Crewell.
Survivors include his children: Jennifer (Stephen) Alescio of Schoharie, Rebecca (Stephen) Rose of Amsterdam, Samantha (Brian) Moyster of Cobleskill, Tinamarie Vedder of Nashville, TN, Kirsten Crewell of Amsterdam, Alan (Nettie) Crewell of Schoharie, David Crewell of Schoharie, Stephen (Ashley) Crewell of Sharon Springs,; five step-children: Ernest (Julie) Salisbury of Owensboro, KY, Melissa (Natalie) Vedder of Middleburgh, Melanie Vedder of Berne, Stephanie Lawyer of Schoharie, and Christina Crewell of Kentucky; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; siblings: Vaughn (Phyllis) Crewell of Schoharie, Jacob (Carletta) Crewell of Canajoharie, James (Linda) Crewell of Cobleskill, James Moyer of Scotia, Esther Barton of Fulton, Joan Moyer of Oneonta, Jean Lopez of Schenectady; eleven step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home with brother, Jacob Crewell, officiating. Burial will be in Unadilla Forks Cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to attend a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home from 6 to 8 PM on Monday.
