Cobleskill- Ronald Sanford Oathout, 66, of Cobleskill, died Thursday, March 6, 2014 at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany following a brief illness.
Born April 30, 1947 in Catskill, he was the son of Frank and Alzina Oathout. Ron had lived in Cobleskill for 27 years, living in Greene County beforehand. He worked in retail for many years at Caldor and Jamesway before finding his calling as a house manager for ARC in Middleburgh, a job he loved. He retired in 2006 due to health considerations.
Ron had two passions in life. His first and greatest passions was his wife, Susanne. Ron cherished Sue, and always wanted her to know how much she meant to him. His second was for music and theatre, and his beautiful singing voice made him successful at both. Some of his greatest accomplishments were his role as Peter in a Greene County production of Jesus Christ Superstar, singing at his daughter's wedding, and participating in a charity fundraiser cabaret.
Ron thrived on his relationships with friends and family, and loved to have coffee with Sue at the local Stewarts and chat with whoever walked by. He always had a pretty good joke to tell. His booming voice was not to be missed.
Ron raised his 4 children and cared for many more as a foster parent for 15 years. He loved children, and was a wonderful grandfather who was cherished by his 11 grandchildren. They will dearly miss their Pop Pops.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Susanne Oathout, his children: Michael (Angela) Oathout of Catskill, Joseph (Courtney) Oathout of Purling, Alicia (David) Keenan of San Ramon, CA, and Megan Oathout of Middleburgh; his sister: Nancy (Jeff) Romak of Catskill; eleven grandchildren: Aimee Oathout, Charlie Rivera, Nathan Lamont, Andrew Lamont, Zackary Oathout, Victoria Oathout, Ania Keenan, Lorelei Keenan, Grayson Keenan, Simon Keenan, and Rowan Keenan.
A funeral service will be held at 2PM on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with his brother-in-law, Rev. Richard Blaisdell, officiating. Family and friends are also invited to attend a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home prior to the service on Sunday, from 12PM to 2PM.
