On May 2, 2024, Robert “Bob” E. Mau, Sr. died of Takotsubo (Broken Heart Syndrome) four months after the death of his beloved wife, Janice. He was predeceased by his siblings: Kate, William, and Gordon, son-in-law, Ron Chiafery, and great-grandson, Wyatt Mistretta. He died comfortably surrounded by family.
Bob was a proud Army veteran having served in Germany for post-war reconstruction. Upon completion of his service, he married the love of his life, Jan, on October 20, 1956. They had met at a square dance when they were 15 years old. They had five children, Marianne Chiafery, Robert E. Mau Jr., Allison (Jeffery) Atkins, Peter Mau, and Wendy ( Alan) Herzog. He was the proud Grampy to 8 lovely young ladies and 8 great-grandchildren who all adored him.
Bob led an active and fulfilling life. He was a foreman at General Electric and owned/operated Mau Septic Service. He was a member of the Middleburgh Rotary and served as Town Councilman. Bob was a talented carpenter, having built 2 homes, helped with numerous family construction projects and crafted heirloom furniture. His love of travel took him and Jan to destinations around the world. He shared his love of gardening with multiple generations. Everyone clamored for his homemade soups, often made with fresh vegetables from his garden.
Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation to be held from 11AM to 1PM on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Military Honors will take place at 1PM at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
