Robert Buren

Carlisle- Robert E. Van Buren, 79, of State Route 20, died Sunday, December 5, 2010 at his residence following a long illness.

Born April 3, 1931 in Cobleskill, he was a son of Norman and Lottie (Roe) Van Buren.

Robert was a lifelong area resident, joining the United States Army in 1950. He was decorated with four Bronze Service Stars, a Korean Service Medal, three overseas bars, the Meritorious Unit Emblem, United Nations Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal for honorably serving his country during the Korean Conflict until his discharge in 1954.

He was a molder at General Electric in Schenectady until retiring in 1986. Robert was an avid hunter, and an antique collector of hunting and kitchen items.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard A. Van Buren, who died Nov. 6, 1996.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Hotaling Van Buren, whom he married Nov. 19, 1955 in Cobleskill; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert F. (Joan) Van Buren of Cobleskill; a daughter-in-law: Marie Gross Van Buren of Phila., PA; three grandchildren: Richard M. Van Buren and Alexa Van Buren, both of Phila., PA, and Michelle Mau of Virginia; nephew, Morris (Corky) Coons of Cobleskill and other nephews and nieces.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Burial with military honors will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 PM.
