Robert Brown,
Cobleskill- Robert (Bob) Brown, Sr., of Stoneview Heights in Cobleskill, formerly of Carlisle and Sharon Springs, died Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
Robert , 86, was born November 28, 1927 in Carlisle, NY, son of the late Harold and Ethel (Russell) Brown. He graduated from the former Cobleskill High School class of 1946. In 1947, Bob, as a member of the Coast Guard, became a "sea-going cowboy" on a ship carrying mules to Greece after the war sponsored by the Brethren Service Committee of New Windsor, Maryland.
Bob started his career with the Dairy Herd Improvement Association as a milk tester, then as owner and operator as a fifth generation farmer on the Old Brown Homestead in Carlisle. He later served as tuxedo manager for the Cameo Bridal Shoppe that he and his wife, Helen owned and operated for 17 years on the family farm.
Bob was a Carlisle Town Assessor, an officer of the Carlisle Cemetery Association, a member of the Dairyman's League, Grange member, a 4-H leader and member of the Holstein Club. He served in many capacities in the churches he belonged to through his life, including Sunday school teacher, Elder, and Deacon. He was a member of the Cobleskill First Baptist Church and also attended the Christian Church of Charleston Four Corners.
He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Myron Brown.
He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Helen Mae Barber, who he married on August 6, 1950 and together enjoyed 63 ½ years; daughters: Debra James and husband, Gary, of Cornville, Arizona, Doreen (Dodi) Cechnicki and husband, Gene, of Canajoharie, and son: Robert (Bobby) and fiancé, Lori, of East Worcester; grandchildren: Brian (Shannon) Cechnicki, Kimberly (Dan) Mattice, Robert Brown III, Whitney and their mother, Cathy Brown; his great-grandchild: Kara Emily Mattice; his sister: Mrs. Roger Barber (Grace) of Middleburgh; and his sister-in-law: Catherine A. Brown of Cobleskill.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 13, 2014 at First Baptist Church, 492 W. Main St., Cobleskill with Rev. Julien Weil and Rev. Brett Popp co-officiating. A period of visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Wednesday at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. A committal service will be held at 11:30 Saturday, May 10, 2014 in Carlisle Cemetery.
