Richmondville- (Schoharie County) - Richard L. Scholet, 91, of Brooker Hollow Road, passed on Monday, March 8, 2010 at A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital in Oneonta, NY.

Born February 11, 1919 in Ogdensburg, NY, he was a son of Leo J. and Ethel (Haller) Scholet.

Mr. Scholet was owner of Scholet Furniture, which originated in Cobleskill. In 1984 he sold the business to his son, Arthur Scholet. Dick was a World War II Army Veteran, enlisting in 1940 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. A member of the Cobleskill VFW and American Legion, he was also active in the Schoharie American Legion Post 1261 Color Guard.

Dick Scholet was active in his community in many regards. He was a member of the Cobleskill Exchange Club for over 60 years and was a former president. He was a member of the Cobleskill Masonic Lodge. Dick volunteered for the Salvation Army, assisting in their fundraising events; was a member of the Christian Men's Breakfast Group serving as Treasurer for several years. He served as president of the Cobleskill Merchants Bureau; was an active member of the Schoharie County Republican Party; was a past President of the Cobleskill Chamber of Commerce; and more recently served on the Richmondville Zoning Board. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years and in 2000 he proudly received their highest award possible, the Silver Beaver award. Additionally he square danced for years with his wife Jean with the Schoharie Valley Hayshakers and for over 20 years, was active with the social group in Cobleskill known as The Coby Walkers.

For over 50 years, Mr. Scholet was an active member of the former Christian Science Society in Cobleskill, and was a current member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Oneonta.

Dick married his childhood sweetheart and was happily married for 64 years. He is survived by his wife, Jean (Rasbach) Scholet, whom he married February 3, 1946; his children: Arthur (Diane) Scholet of Oneonta, Thomas (Karen) Scholet of Lakewood, CO, and Cosanne "Cosy" (Scott) Schneberger of Elsah, IL; a sister, Rellah Greenwood of Oxford, NY; his grandchildren: Meggan (Stephen) Flaherty of Newton, MA, Sara Beth Newell (Nick Block) Charlotte, NC; Erick (Sharon) Scheminske of Englewood, CO, Emily McFerren of Rochester, MI, and Sunny Schneberger of Newton, MA; and three great-grandchildren: Katja Flaherty, and Reagan and Parker Scheminske.

Richard was predeceased by his twin brothers, Donald and Ronald Scholet.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 5:00 PM, Friday, March 12, 2010 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY. The family will also receive friends during a period of visitation from 4-5 PM prior to the Celebration of Life at the funeral home. Military honors will be presented by the Schoharie American Legion Post 1261 at the conclusion of the service. Burial will be private. Friends and family are invited to a reception after the Celebration of Life beginning at 6 PM at the Best Western, Burgin Drive, in Cobleskill for continued fellowship.
