Goodyear Lake- Richard (Dick) P. Coons, 80, of Lakeshore Drive North, died Thursday, November 21, 2013 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown following a brief illness.

Born December 12, 1932 in Cobleskill he was the son of Willard R. and Vera (Putnam) Coons. Richard was a 1950 graduate of the former Cobleskill Central School.

He was a United States Army veteran serving from 1953 until receiving an honorable discharge in 1955.

Richard operated the family business, Coons Sales and Service, on Union St. in Cobleskill for over forty years until retiring and selling the building in 1994.

He was a 32nd degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #394 of Cobleskill. He was also a member of the Schenevus AMVets.

He married Janet Clarke on March 7, 1951 and they raised their family in Lawyersville, moving to Goodyear Lake seven years ago.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Coons of Goodyear Lake; six children: Alison Coons of Richmondville, Becky (David) Morin of Goodyear Lake, Clarke (Suzanne) Coons of Palmer Lake, CO, Megan (John) Hughes of Grosse Pointe Park, MI, JoAnne Coons of Palmer Lake, CO, and Todd (Laurie) Coons of Adams, MA; his sister: Terrie (Alan) Robbins of Gloversville; and eight grandchildren: Arika Morin, Dylan Coons, Clarke, Emily, and Johnny Hughes, Alyssa, Brandon and Malia Coons.

Private services will be held at the family's request. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104-2396.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.
