Rev. Merle Young

Sharon Springs- Rev. Merle H. Young, 85, died Monday, January 19, 2015, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta where he has been a resident for the past few months.

He was born in Lock Haven, PA, June 6, 1929 to Dr. and Mrs. Howard Young (deceased). He was married to Georgine Snyder June 30, 1951, and she predeceased him on Oct. 6, 2007. He graduated from Lock Haven High School in June, 1947. He graduated receiving his Diploma & Teacher Certificate from the Extension Department in Piano from Sherwood Music School, Chicago, IL in 1946 and 1947. He attended Providence Bible Institute in Providence, RI.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Brent Young (RoseAnn), Apalachin, NY, and a daughter, Janice Pahls (Christian) of Seward, NY. Also five grandchildren, Holly Knight (Isaiah), Keri Prok (Andrew), Shannon Breher (Jeremy), Ryan Young and Kevin Young. He also had three great-grandchildren, Elijah Knight, Hannah Knight, and Lincoln Breher.

Rev. Young served as Minister of Music in two churches in New Jersey. He served as pastor at Cole Memorial Baptist Church, Hawley, PA, Bethel Memorial Baptist Church, Easton, PA, Grace Community Church, Franklin Lakes, NJ and Faith Bible Church, Sprakers, NY. He retired on January 1, 1992 to his home in Sharon Springs, NY.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill where a period of visitation will be held from 12 to 2 PM prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. Terry Brant. Spring interment will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon, NY.
