Cobleskill- Raymond Fernandez, 97, of Woodland Drive, Cobleskill, New York died Saturday, July 29, 2023 at his home, with his family by his side.
Born on January 18, 1926 in Cobleskill, NY, he was the son of Claudio and Leticia (Perez) Fernandez.
He was a proud veteran of the US Navy, serving from 1943-1946. Ray was on a light cruiser, the USS Detroit for two and a half years, and he was aboard the USS Detroit when it was alongside the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the World War II peace treaty.
Raymond was store manager for Stewart's Shops and for A&P.
On July 3, 1948 Raymond married Virginia "Ginnie" Stanton. Together they celebrated over 75 years of marriage.
He served as a volunteer for the Salvation Army, the Bramanville Prospect Cemetery, and the food bank at the First Baptist Church of Cobleskill. Ray was a member of Coby Walkers and enjoyed playing dominoes and cards with friends and family.
He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Catherine Fernandez; and grandson, Michael Roy.
Raymond is survived by his loving wife, Ginnie Fernandez of Cobleskill; son, Douglas (Carol) Fernandez of Lawrenceville, GA; daughters: Diane (Steven) Silk of Jacksonville, FL, Ann-Marie (Richard) Frank of Cobleskill, NY; grandchildren, Anthony (Kaylyn) Fernandez, Joseph (Abigail) Fernandez, Adam Silk, Michael (Brittani) Silk, Diana Frank and Melissa Roy; great-grandchildren, Regan, Riley, Reece, Elizabeth, Joshua, Rebekah, Jonathan, George, Casey, Hunter, Bailey; brother-in-law, Carlton Stanton of Kenosha, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, August 3, 2023 from 10:00-11:00am with a funeral service immediately following at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY 12043 with Nancy Harrington officiating. Burial will take place in Bramanville Prospect Cemetery with Military Honors at graveside.
