Mr. Donald R. Mace Sr., 84, of Walhalla Road died Monday, March 22, 2010 at Robinson Terrace in Stamford, NY following a long illness.
Don was born in Gilboa, NY on April 13, 1925, a son of the late Gladys (Lemon) and Stanley V. Mace. He attended Gilboa Central School before leaving to serve his country. Don served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1951 and was a member of the 82nd Air Born Division.
He worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Engineer's Local 106 in Albany, NY before retiring and then sold Snap-On Tools for a few years. Don returned to work as an Operator for the New York State Power Authority in Gilboa, NY before retiring again, in 1997. Don also served the Town of Fulton as Justice of the Peace, Councilman and Town Supervisor.
Don was a member of the Breakabeen Presbyterian Church and the Susquehanna Trails American Legion Post # 1764 in Conesville, NY. He was also Free & Accepted Mason since 1947 and a member of Lodge # 630 in Gilboa, NY. Don was an assistant Boy Scout Leader and enjoyed doing part-time carpentry, hunting, fishing and cutting firewood.
Don was predeceased by his granddaughter: Erin Lynn Perrotti; his brother: Robert Mace and his sister: Dora Mace.
Don is survived by his wife, Rose (Miller) Mace whom he married on August 18, 1950 and his daughters: Coleen (Larry) Perrotti of Sloansville, NY, Mary (Charles) Chichester of Breakabeen, NY; sons: Donald R. (Cindi) Mace of Duanesburg, NY, John S. (Pam) Mace of Cobleskill, NY; granddaughters: Beverly (Peter) LeRuzic of Schoharie, NY, Kristin (Adam) Cooke of Gilboa, NY, Amber (William, III) Papas of North Blenheim, NY; grandsons: Paul (Christina) Mace of Calcoun, NY, Larry (Amy) Perrotti of Altamont, NY, Casey (Dana) Chichester of Breakabeen, NY and he was "Poppy Don" to his 7 great-grandchildren. Don is also survived by his sister: Katherine Bedford of Stamford, NY and his brothers: Stewart and Victor Mace, both of Gilboa, NY.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday March 27, 2010 at the Breakabeen Presbyterian Church, Clauverwie, Breakabeen, NY with Rev. Robert Kendall officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation from 5-8pm, Friday March 26, 2010 at the Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, NY. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Breakabeen Cemetery.
