Richmondville- Philip A. Markley, Jr., 82, of Franzen Road, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Born April 12, 1928 in Hoboken, NJ, Philip was a son of Philip A. and Nina (Foland) Markley, Sr.
He was employed as a truck driver for Fort Edward Express of Albany for many years, retiring in 1988. Mr. Markley also worked in the maintenance department at the former Community Hospital of Schoharie County (currently Cobleskill Regional Hospital) for several years.
Philip was a lifetime member of the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Department with fifty-five years of dedicated service and a lifetime member of the Fraternal Organization of Eagles Aeries of Cobleskill #2695. He was a former stock car driver in the 1950's, who was known as "Fearless", and was an avid Nascar and football fan. Philip also enjoyed bowling.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joan (Case) Markley, who died May 28, 2006.
Survivors include his three daughters: Phyllis Joslyn of Howes Cave, Linda (David) Butler of Richmondville, and Laura Butler (Edwin Brown) of Richmondville; five sons: James Markley of Albany, Paul Markley (Janet Bialkowski) of Cobleskill, Larry (Anne) Markley of Carlisle, Jeffrey (Carolyn) Markley of Cobleskill, and Henry (Pat) Markley of Richmondville; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-laws: Judith Holmes of Cobleskill and Arlene Johnson of Freemont, MI and a cousin: Clementina Sisson of Cobleskill.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill, with Rev. Paul Messner officiating. A period of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, prior to the service with the Fireman's Prayer Service at 1:45 PM. Burial will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
