Cobleskill- Mr. Paul "Smiley" A. Thorington, 71, of Mineral Springs Road, died Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
Paul was born December 11, 1935 in Broome, NY, the son of Frank and Esther (Cammer) Thorington. He was a lifelong area resident, graduating from Middleburgh Central School in the class of 1954 and then joined the United States Navy serving until 1958 when he received an honorable discharge. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Medal. Upon completing his enlistment, Paul was instrumental in the formation of the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corp.
Paul was the delivery manager for Scholet Furniture Store for forty years before retiring. He was also employed by the New York State Police for twenty-five years.
As a volunteer, Smiley had over 40 years of service with the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Department and served as a past Fire Chief. He was also a paramedic for private paid ambulances.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia (Devanny) Thorington whom he married June 12, 1960; 2 daughters: Kay Thorington of Whitesburg, TN, and Lisa Thorington of Cobleskill; 1 son: Michael Thorington of Cobleskill; a sister;: Lois Daniels of Ronkonkoma, NY; and 6 grandchildren: Elaine Thorington, Jon Hunt, Brandon and Bryan Pollard, Christopher and Tiffany Thorington.
A funeral liturgy will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 at St. Vincent de Paul Church 138 Washington Ave. Cobleskill with Father John Roos officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday at the Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home 171 Elm St. Cobleskill, where a Fireman's Service will be held at 5 PM. Burial will be in Bramanville-Prospect Cemetery.
