CARLISLE- Paul R. Nelson, 74, of Corbin Hill Rd., died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY after a brief illness.
Born June 28, 1938 in Gloversville, he was a son of Charles and Edna (Hill) Nelson.
Paul was a 1956 graduate of Perth Central School and in 1958 received his Associate degree in Animal Husbandry from SUNY Cobleskill.
For the past forty-six years he has been the proprietor of Harmony Acres Flower and Craft Shop/Partyland in Cobleskill with his wife working at his side. Paul also owned and operated Scoops Restaurant on Main St. in Cobleskill for five years. Paul had retired as a school bus driver from the former Cobleskill Central School after twenty-eight years of service.
Active in numerous community organizations, Paul was a life member of the Carlisle Volunteer Fire Department for thirty years and served as fire commissioner for twenty-five years. He was a member of the board of directors for the Sunshine Fair for twenty-five years.
In his spare time he found pleasure in gardening and manicuring his lawn, as well as jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and reading.
Survivors include his wife: Loretta (Lighthall) Nelson, whom he married November 18, 1961; his children: Thomas (Terri) of DE, Sherry of FL, Lynn of Cobleskill, Lori (Scott) of Poughkeepsie, Linda (Mike) of Carlisle, Robin of Summit, Robert of FL, and Ronald (Sarah) of TN; his sister: Marilyn (Ted) of Johnstown, and brother: Carl (Mary Ann) of W. VA; twelve grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 pm, Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, with Rev. Donald Klob officiating. A period of visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11am until 1 pm prior to the service.
