Middleburgh- Paul Kristofik, 96, of Clauverwie, died Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Paul was born in Caskov, Czechoslovakia on March 21, 1920 to Suzana (Juricek) and John Kristofik.
He was educated in Czechoslovakia until he immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 and continued his schooling.
Paul enlisted in the Army in 1940, serving in the Signal Corp, Company Aviation, Panama. After earning his paratrooper wings in jump school, he was sent to Camp Mackall, NC and trained on gliders. He joined the 551 Infantry Battalion and served in North Africa, Italy and Sicily.
In 1944, he made one combat jump during the invasion of southern France. He also faced combat in the Battle of the Bulge, spending 2 weeks outside day and night in snow and freezing weather, catching frostbite and needing a stay in the hospital. Two thirds of his battalion suffered heavy casualties while the rest transferred to the 82. Paul received his honorable discharge and returned to the United States in 1945.
Paul worked as a lineman at the Long Island Lighting Company in Hicksville until retiring after 37 years of employment. He was a member of the Timothy Murphy Post #248 American Legion in Middleburgh since 1996 and enjoyed photography, gardening and traveling throughout the country.
He was predeceased by his first wife: Mildred E. Kalab and his son: Jerrold Paul Kristofik.
Paul is survived by his beloved second wife, Carolou, who will be forever grateful for all of his support in her art career, his sister: Suzanne Stross of Manhasset, NY and many cousins.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, November 10, 2016 in Middleburgh Cemetery, Middleburgh, NY.
