Oliver Northrup

Middleburgh- Oliver W. Northrup, 87, of Grove Street, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Good Samaritan Lutheran Health Care Center in Delmar, where he had been a resident the past few weeks.
Mr. Northrup was born February 10, 1921 in Canton, NY, the son of Arthur and Myrtle (Woodbridge) Northrup. He had attended both country and city schools in Niagara and St. Lawrence Counties and was a graduate of Potsdam State Teachers College.
Mr. Northrup began teaching elementary education in Herkimer and then Middleburgh, where he retired from.
He was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1942 to 1945, when he received an honorable discharge. His tours took him to New Guinea, Papuan, and the Philippine Islands. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 bronze stars, as well as the Good Conduct Medal, 3 Overseas Bars, 1 Service Strip and the American Theater Ribbon.
Mr. Northrup was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Cobleskill and had attended the United Methodist Church in Middleburgh and the Presbyterian Church in Schoharie. He was a charter member of the Schoharie Valley Concert Band where he played the trombone.
He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia, who died in 2005.
Survivors include his son, Alan, of Albany, one sister, Arlene (Lloyd) Flack of Briar Hill, NY, one brother, Arthur (Evah Jane) Northrup of Queensbury, NY and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 12,at the United Methodist Church, Main Street, Middleburgh with Rev. Kay Truax and Rev. Carol Coltrain officiating. A calling hour will from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Church. Burial will be in Middleburgh Cemetery in the spring.
