Seward- Nathaniel "Dick" Southworth, 77, of Gardnersville Road, died Thursday, November 12, 2015 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY.
Born May 2, 1938 in Seward, he was the son of Nathaniel R. and Marie (King) Southworth.
A lifetime area resident, Dick retired from NY State Department of Corrections in Summit as a motor vehicle resident. Prior to that, he had been a heavy equipment operator for Nadeau Construction, Veley Construction, and MOSA Landfill.
Dick was active in the Boy Scouts of America Otschodela Council, serving as a Master on a local and district level, the district camping committee and the grounds committee. In 1989, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award.
Dick was a lifelong member of the Eagles Aeries of Cobleskill #2695 and a sixty-year member of the Seward Valley Grange where he was a former master.
Survivors include his wife, Deanna (Bellinger) Southworth, whom he married November 17, 1956; his two sons: Dennis (Brenda) Southworth of Seward and Mark (Christine) Southworth of Delanson; his brother: Harold (Jackie) Southworth of Worcester; two grandsons: Jeremiah Southworth of Cobleskill and Barry Sisson of California City, CA; two great-grandchildren: Kiaya and Rainah Southworth of Cobleskill.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 16, 2015 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with David Houck officiating. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM at the funeral home. The Eagles will have a prayer service at 3:45 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon, NY.
