HUDSON, N.Y. - Nancy C. LaChance, 79, of Middleburgh, New York died May 15, 2008 at Columbia Memorial Hospital here after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Nancy Jane Carruthers on February 17, 1929 in Waddington, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late John and Bessie (Peacock) Carruthers.
She is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" (LaChance) McKeon of Chatham; her two cherished grandchildren, Jack and Maura McKeon, both of Chatham; her sister, Jean Curtis (Milford) of Potsdam, N.Y.; her niece, Susan Spinney (Mark) of Franklin, TN; her great-niece, Shannon Spinney of Franklin, TN; her great-nephew, Michael Morris of Franklin, TN; her nephew, James Curtis (Cameron) of Silver Spring, MD; her great-niece, Jessie Curtis of Silver Spring, MD; her great-nephew, Lyell Curtis of Silver Spring, MD; her nephew, Christopher Adams (Geane) of Friendswood, TX; her great-niece, Vanna Stevenson and her great-nephew, Loren Stevenson, both of Texas; her nephew, John Adams of Conifer, CO and Vero Beach, FL; her niece, Barbara Bockrath (Brad) of Bethel Park, PA; her great-niece, Diane Bockrath of Baltimore, MD; her special "Daughter No. 2," Chrissie Reid of Andover Township, NJ; and her two grand-cats, Phoebe and Max, both of Chatham.
She was predeceased by her husband, Owen "Jack" LaChance, who died on Nov. 13, 1979; her sister, Elisabeth Adams; and her brother, John Carruthers.
She graduated from Waddington High School in 1947 and Ogdensburg Business College in 1948, later working for St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. and Syracuse University.
She married Jack LaChance on Dec. 27, 1953 in Grace Episcopal Church in Canton, N.Y. The couple later settled in Middleburgh, Schoharie County where they made their home and raised their daughter. Nancy was an avid reader all of her life and enjoyed books, puzzles, cats and flowers, especially lilacs. In her earlier years, she enjoyed painting with acrylics and oils. Spending time with her daughter, Jackie, her grandchildren, family and friends was her greatest joy.
In 1957, Nancy began what would be a more than 30-year career with Schoharie County, working first in the county treasurer's office and later the county probation department. She worked for many years until her retirement in 1992 as an account clerk for the Schoharie County Department of Social Services Support Collection Unit. Upon her retirement, she served as deputy village clerk for the Village of Schoharie for several years.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, May 21 from 6-8 p.m. at the Palmer and Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 22 at 1 p.m. from the funeral home with Fr. Gary Gelfenbien, of St. James Church in Chatham,officiating. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Canton, N.Y.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nancy's memory may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Animalkind, 721 Warren St., Hudson, N.Y. 12534.
