Cobleskill- Morris "Corky" Coons, Jr., 81, of South Grand St., died Sunday, September 6, 2015 at his home following a long illness.

Born August 23, 1934 in Cobleskill he was the son of Morris and Minnie (VanBuren) Coons, Sr. A lifelong area resident, Corky was a 1953 graduate of the former Cobleskill Central School. He was employed at SUNY Cobleskill for thirty-four years, retiring as head of the paint department.

He was an avid hunter and skeet shooter. Corky participated in pistol and accurate rifle competitions, and won many trophies in tournaments for his shooting abilities. He was a longtime volunteer for the Historic Treasures Museum located at the Schoharie County Sunshine Fairgrounds. Corky was instrumental in the building of the structure to its continual operations.

His first wife, Beverly Eckerson, predeceased him in 1982.

Survivors include his wife: Hope (Sagendorf) Coons, whom he married June 9, 1989; his two children: Jeffrey (Gwen) Coons and Roxann Coons Collins, all of Cobleskill; two stepsons: Jim (Betty) Marshall of Sharon Springs and Andrew (Debbie Rickard) Marshall of Schoharie; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Barnerville United Methodist Church, 224 Shady Tree Lane, Howes Cave with Rev. Mary Ellen Moore officiating. Inurnment will be private in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home of Middleburgh.
