Mildred Whitbeck

Mildred Rew Whitbeck, 98, of Cobleskill, died Sunday morning, January 3, 2010, at her home on Edgewood Drive. She was the widow of Henry B. Whitbeck, who died November 15, 2008.

Mildred was born in Unadilla, Otsego County, on January 16, 1911, to David and Mary Melina Marsh Rew. She moved to Cobleskill at a young age and graduated from Cobleskill High School. She attended Syracuse University and had to withdraw during the depression but continued to follow and cheer for Orange football teams. She completed secretarial school in Poughkeepsie and then worked for Sheriff Eli Shelmandine, attorney Sharon Mauhs, Congressman Ernest Wharton, and other employers before marrying Henry Whitbeck and maintaining his law practice as secretary and office manager.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Cherry Valley and returned to her childhood church, Zion Lutheran of Cobleskill, in her later years. She was active in American Legion Auxiliary where she held numerous local and district offices and was a founder of the Richmondville Legion Auxiliary. She was a Girl Scout troop leader and council member and a founder of the Schoharie County Women's Republican Club.

Mildred is survived by her children Anne (Lester Hendrix), Henry J. (Lizabeth), and Jane Whitbeck (Jim Wayman); and grandchildren, Giancarlo and Tatiana Boba; Rene, Henry W., David, and Devon Whitbeck; Kyla Berdan; Jesse Outlaw and Cody Outlaw (Pathfinder Village); and great-grandchildren, Pamela and Rosa Boba. Also surviving are three nieces, Marie R. Austin of Stamford, Sarah (Thomas) Dinnel of Summit, and Jean Rew of Latham; nephew John I. (Cynthia) VanVoris of Tampa, Fla.; cousins Anne and Dennis Derrick, Kay and Phillip Masters, and Beryl Edwards, of Somerset Shire, United Kingdom; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by five siblings and many nieces and nephews.

During her final years, Mildred received wonderful care from a number of caregivers, and her family members extend their gratitude and appreciation to these devoted friends and aides.

Friends may call at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010. The funeral will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Paul Ferenczy of Zion Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Springfield Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
