East Worcester- Mrs. Mildred Edna (Salisbury, Winchell) Brown, 94, of Depot Street, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Oneonta Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Brown was born May 29, 1914 in Cobleskill, the daughter of Benjamin P. and Nona (Wayman) Salisbury.
She moved to Oneonta and attended school and graduated from Oneonta Normal School as an elementary teacher. Mrs. Brown taught in a one-room school in Furnaceville, Lutheranville, and South Worcester Hill. In 1952 she started teaching kindergarten and then third grade at the Richmondville Central School where she retired in 1972.
She was a member of the Bassett Hospital Auxiliary of Schoharie County and served as membership chairman, a member of the Captain Christian Brown Chapter of the D.A.R. and also the Richmondville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Brown enjoyed traveling somewhat, knitting, crocheting, reading, word-finds, and her grand and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Brown married Robert A. Winchell in March 1940 and he died December 1944. She later married Aura J. Brown in 1954 and he predeceased her in January 1959. She was also predeceased by a brother, Paul Salisbury of Oneonta.
She is survived by three children: Joan Winchell of East Worcester, William (Electa) Winchell of Oneida, and Roberta Winchell of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren: Kimberly Taylor of Sarasota, FL, Karen Voorhees of Beaufort, SC, Edward (Laurie) Winchell and Robert (Roxanne) Winchell all of Oneida, Lori Curtis of St. Louis, MO, and Timothy Curtis of Sherman Oakes, CA; six great-grandchildren: Nicole, Jamie, Anthony and Zachary Winchell of Oneida, Mathew Voorhees of Earlville, and Rachel Schaffer of Beaufort, SC; a sister-in-law: Jean Salisbury of Oneonta, and a niece, Gayle Ryan of Oneonta.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, August 4, 2008 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home 171 Elm St. Cobleskill with Rev. Marvin Batcher of the Richmondville United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Worcester, NY
