Middleburgh- Michael "Suitcase Mike" D. Devlin, 62, of Cliff Street, died Thursday, September 14, 2006, at Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.
Mike was born May 31, 1944 in Teaneck, NJ, the son of Charles and Anna (Bartz) Devlin.
In 1981 he moved from Closter, NJ to Middleburgh. Mike was the proprietor of the former Corner Deli and Liquor Store in Middleburgh. He initiated the semi-pro Merchants Baseball Team in Middleburgh and ran it from 1987 to 1992 when his son, Michael, took it over.
Mike was a 20 year member of the Rockleigh Volunteer Fire Department in NJ and a 24 year member of the Middleburgh Volunteer Fire Department.
He married Colette Barretta, who survives him, along with 2 sons: Michael P. (Tanya) Devlin and Brian K. (Dana) Devlin all of Middleburgh; his mother, Anna (Bartz) Devlin of Doylestown, PA; 3 sisters: Maureen Willoughy of Doylestown, PA, Kathleen Liathi of Montvale, NJ, and Sharon Smith of Newburgh, NY; a brother, Ronald Devlin of Montvale, NJ; and a granddaughter, Sierra Devlin of Middleburgh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006 at St. Catherine's Church Main St. Middleburgh with Father Thomas F. Holmes as celebrant. Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM on Monday at the Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home 134 River St. Middleburgh where a Fireman's Service will be held at 7:45 PM. Cremation will follow the mass at Vale Crematory, Schenectady.
