Cobleskill- Merton D. Karker, 96, of Washington Ave., died Monday, December 8, 2014 at his residence.
Born March 31, 1918 in Cobleskill, he was the son, Charles M. and Margaret (Jones) Karker. Merton was a 1936 graduate of the former Cobleskill Central School and attended Cobleskill Agriculture and Technical College.
His career began with Cobleskill Village Water Department where he installed meters in the homes of the village. He worked for Howe Caverns for a short time and then became a partner in Moore & Karker and Rose and Karker grocery store. For over twenty years, he worked at United Baking Co. in Schenectady and then was a bus driver for thirty-six years with Cobleskill Richmondville School District.
Merton was a twenty-five year volunteer firefighter and served as assistant chief for Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Dept. and assistant county fire coordinator. He assisted in developing the Carlisle Fire Dept., was a charter member of the Cobleskill B.P.O.E. 2040, and was a member of the former Cobleskill Flying Club.
He married Margaret Ottman on Dec. 19, 1940 and she predeceased him after 70 years of marriage on Jan. 17, 2011. He was also predeceased by his brother: Howard Karker, sister: Betty Tillapaugh, and daughter-in-law: Jane Karker.
Survivors include his three children: Margaret Karker and Sue-Ann Karker, both of Cobleskill, and Charles Karker of Fort Plain; two grandsons: Philip Karker and Chris-jon (Tessie) Karker all of Fort Plain; two great-grandchildren: Emma Mae and McKenna Lea Karker; a brother: Ralph Karker of Palm Harbor, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. A period of visitation will be held at the funeral home prior to the service from 1 to 2 PM. Rev. Pamela Mikel-Hayes of Cobleskill United Methodist Church will officiate. Spring interment will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
