Melvin Gorton Sr

Warnerville- Melvin "Mountain" C. Gorton, Sr., 69, of Greenbush Road, died Sunday, December 21, 2014, at his residence.

Born January 15, 1945 in Cobleskill, he was the son of Frederick and Theresa (Hadsell) Gorton.

Melvin retired in 1997 from General Electric in Schenectady, where he was a welder, polisher, and worked on turbines. He was a member of the IUE Union as well as the Schoharie County Bluebird Society,

Melvin was a jack-of-all-trades, doing both mechanical and carpentry work. He was a wildlife activist.

He was predeceased by his wife, Martha, who died Oct. 27, 1996, his parents, and a brother, Gregory,

Survivors include his two children: Violet (Alonzo) Odell of Warnerville, and Melvin C. (Sue) Gorton, Jr. of Gallupville; a brother: Robert (Georgianna) Gorton of Cobleskill; three sisters: Joan Crapser of Carlisle, Phyllis Quackenbush of Sharon Springs and Gwen Burris of PA; his step-mother: Janet Gorton of Cobleskill; five grandchildren: Alisha Gorton of Richmondville, Paige (Lenny) Cook of Central Bridge, Alonzo Odell of Warnerville, Gregory Gorton of Gallupville, and Joshua Odell of Warnerville.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill with Maxine and Richard Christman officiating. A period of visitation will be held at the funeral home prior to the service, from 1 to 2 PM. Spring interment will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
