Mary C. Shufelt, of Oakdale, CT, formerly of Middleburgh, NY, died on February 14, 2007 at Orchard Grove Specialty Care Center in Montville, CT. She was born on April 26, 1911 in Dun Loaghaire, Ireland. In 1920 she came to America on the Cunard Steamship-Imperator out of Liverpool, England. She and her parents settled in Brooklyn, NY. She graduated from Browns Business College in NY in 1929. She married William F. Shufelt in Middleburgh, NY in 1935. They lived in Coxsakie, NY and Brooklyn, NY before settling permanently in Middleburgh in 1945.
Mary helped her husband run the Middleburgh Bowling Lanes for a number of years. They organized leagues, taught bowling and promoted the sport of bowling. She was also employed in the JJ Newberry Co., Cobleskill, NY for a few years. After her husband passed away in Jan. 1969, she was employed by the Middleburgh Telephone Co. until her retirement in 1984.
Mary was an avid bowler and active in the Schoharie Co. Bowling Association of which she was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1994. She was a communicant of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Cobleskill Community Hospital, she served on the Election Board for the Village of Middleburgh and is a Life Member of the Cobleskill Elks Lodge #2040. She enjoyed doing crosswords, watching sporting events, traveling and most of all spending time with family.
Mary was a devoted and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves behing her loving family, daughter and husband, Barbara and Ronald Benham, of Oakdale, CT and four sons and their wives, William and Ann Shufelt of Pocomoke City, MD, Joseph and Dolores Shufelt of Ballston Spa, NY, Robert and Paula Shufelt of Schoharie, NY, and John Shufelt of Oneonta, NY. Also, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren survive her.
Friends and family may call from 7 to 9 PM on Monday, Feb. 19 at Palmer & Shaylor, Inc. Funeral Home 134 River St. Middleburgh, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tues. at 10:30 AM at St. Catherines' Catholic Church Main St. Middleburgh, with Father Thomas F. Holmes as Celebrant. Spring interment will be in Middleburgh Cemetery.
