Mary S. Elwood

October 23, 1932 — February 20, 2022

Carlisle- Mary S. Elwood, 89, of S. Crosby Road, died Sunday, February 20, 2022, at her home surrounded by her loving husband and family.

 

Born on October 23, 1932, in Plattsburgh, she was the daughter of George and Ruth (Canfield) Sluyter.

 

Mary attended the Utica Teaching College and continued her education at SUNY Cobleskill receiving a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood.  She was employed as a mail carrier from 1969 until retiring in 2000.  Mary also was involved in the daily operations of their dairy farm until 1987.

 

Life on the farm was good and she loved being at home, taking care of the yard and gardens.  Mary also was crafty at knitting and crocheting.  Family time and having her children and grandchildren with her brought her the most joy and pleasure.

 

Treasuring the years of memories spent with Mary are her husband, David Stanley Elwood, whom she married July 28, 1956; three daughters: Betsy Elwood of Rotterdam, Andrea Myers of Carlisle and Heather (Jim) O’Neil of Newburgh; her granddaughter, Shannon Derr of Central Bridge; a brother, Rodney (Barb) Sluyter of Richfield Springs; a sister, Diane Wells of Laconia, NH and her stepsister, Joanne Deduke of Plattsburgh.

 

Along with her parents, Mary was predeceased by her grandson, Benjamin Derr, son-in-law, Dennis Myers, and two sisters, Katherine Cadieux and Ida Nye both of Plattsburgh.

 

A graveside service will be held in the spring at Carlisle Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to Carlisle Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box B, Carlisle, NY 12031 or to SUNY Cobleskill Foundation, 106 Suffolk Circle- Knapp Hall 228 Cobleskill, NY 12043 or online at www.cobleskill.edu/give.  Please fill in the designation line as: “Fisheries & Wildlife Fund and the “Tribute info” should be completed by clicking “Yes” in the “In Memory” section and type in “Ben Derr”.
