Seward (Schoharie County) - Martin J. Hughes, 69, of Seward Lane, died Monday, June 14, 2010 at Cobleskill Regional Hospital following a long illness.

Born April 24, 1941 in the Bronx to Richard Hughes and (nee) Mary Diamond, both parents born in Co. Mayo, Ireland. He was the brother of Richard and John Hughes.

He attended St. Elizabeth's Grammer School in Washington Heights, Manhattan. He also attended Bishop DuBois High School and graduated from George Washington High School.

In May 1961, he completed his studies at R.C.A. Institute.

In 1963 he married Elizabeth Harrington. In 1968 he and his wife adopted their daughter, Erin Elizabeth. His sons whom he was so proud of are Sean, Liam, and Rory Hughes.

In 1966, Martin received his Certificate of Accomplishment for participation in the training seminar on Solid State Counters from the Hewlett-Packard Company.

In 1968 he was honorably discharged from the US Army.

In March 1970, he successfully completed his course of studies from the Interdata in computer maintenance.

Martin received his Bachelor of Science from C.U.N.Y. in 1977.

Instruments & Control Systems Magazine presented Martin their Microcomputer Control Systems Certificate in July 1979.

During the 1970's Martin worked tirelessly with various Irish organizations to raise money for housing the Irish in Northern Ireland. His goal always was to further Irish nationalism by radio announcements and interviews, marching, attending meetings, dinner dances, press interviews, etc.

From 1981 to 1986 the F.C.C. awarded Martin their Radio Telephone Operator License.

In 1985 McGraw-Edison Co. Power System Division awarded Martin the Distribution System Overvoltage Protection Workshop certificate. In the same year C.P.S. Association awarded a Certificate of completion for the Alara Design Engineering Course. Gibbs & Hill, Inc. also awarded Martin, while at Consolidated Edison, their Cadam Basic Training 4.0 C.E.U. Certificate.

In 1986 after 25 years of service, he left Consolidated Edison Co., and moved to Cobleskill, NY

He was the "computer man" for Interknitting of Cobleskill. He designed, implemented and maintained Interknitting's computer system.

He attended St. Vincent's R.C. Church in Cobleskill and later attended St. Joseph's in Worcester.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill.

Martin is survived by his wife, children, brothers, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren: Tyler, Micheal, and Camille.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, June 18, 2010 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Main St., Worcester, NY. Burial will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery. Visitation hours will be private.
