Lori McCalip

Lori Joan McCalip of Middleburgh, NY died on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY following a long illness. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Lori was born November 14, 1960, in Bronxville, NY. She attended Yonkers Public Schools, graduating from Yonkers Prep High School in 1978. She earned her Associates Degree in Arts and Sciences from SUNY at Cobleskill in 1997, graduating Phi Theta Kappa, earning a 4.0 GPA and received the Applebaum Scholarship Award for excellence in writing.

Beginning 1979, Lori was employed by Loral Electronics Systems Corporation in Yonkers, NY as a telephone operator/receptionist. Her manner was so warm and witty that associates traveling from other locations, both in the US and abroad, often went out of their way to make sure to meet Lori upon visiting the Yonkers facility.

Lori's love of nature and desire for a simpler life brought her to move to Huntersland, a quiet hamlet in Middleburgh, where she had spent all the summers of her childhood in her grandparents' home. As an adult, she lived with her beloved dogs Muffin, Kerry Lou (both deceased) and, later, Mary and Red. Lori has resided in Middleburgh for the past 30 years.

Lori is survived by her parents, Joan and Medford (Mac) McCalip, of Middleburgh and Yonkers, NY: sisters Michelle McCalip Matteis of Yorktown Heights, NY and Sharon McCalip Steinberg of Wilton, CT and their husbands Charlie and Phil respectively; three nieces, Allison Matteis Sannasardo, Kelly Matteis and Katie Steinberg; nephew Brandon McCalip Steinberg: nephew in-law Robert Sannasardo: a great nephew Ryan Sannasardo; and dogs Mary and Red.

Lori was a self-taught singer/guitarist who performed professionally in both the US and Germany. She was a talented artist and crafter who chose to keep her work affordable to all. Lori also loved to sew and go for long walks with her dogs. Lori was the first female to serve as a member of the Huntersland Volunteer Fire Department.

Calling hours will be held at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh, Friday, April 12, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Valley R.C. Church, Main St., Middleburgh on Saturday, April 13 at 11:00 AM, followed by a burial at Middleburgh Cemetery. Father William Gorman and Father Thomas Holmes will be con-celebrants.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Foundation at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.stjude.org.
