Albany, NY – Lewis Adelbert Ward, 95, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at Albany Medical Center, having lived most of his adult life in Cobleskill.
Born on September 25, 1927 to Thompson Bertal Ward and Vera (Mesick) Ward of Guilderland, NY, he graduated from Altamont High School in 1946 before enlisting in the Army. Stationed in Korea during WWII he was assigned to the 8th Army , 6th Division, 1st Infantry, 3rd Battalion. As a reservist, he again was called to service in 1950 for a 2nd deployment, assigned to the 714th Battalion during the Korean War Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1952. Between these two tours of duty Lewis completed a two-year course of study in Business Administration at Albany Business College.
After marrying in 1952, Lewis was employed by General Electric for several years before moving to Lawyersville to own and operate the Lawyersville Cash Market. In 1956 he was commissioned to serve as the Lawyersville Postmaster, and later as postmaster in Esperance NY. He completed his postal service career working for the Regional Offices in Albany. During these years he was active in the Lawyersville Reformed Church’s Men’s Club, serving the church as both an elder and a deacon.
A long-time member of the Cobleskill Exchange Club joining in 1961, Lew was also a member of the local Elks Club and an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts of America earning the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth in 1994. He was also part of the colorful Pumpkin Holler Gang. In 2018 his membership to the General Society of Mayflower Descendants was approved.
Lewis is survived by his four children: Clyde and (Hillary) Ward, Tazewell, TN; Bonnie and (John) Tryon, Remsen, NY; Tina Ward, Cobleskill, NY; Lewie and (Laurie) Ward, Smithville Flats, NY, seven grandchildren: Grace (Ben) Tibbetts, Lincoln, ME; Roberta Buckley, Moss Point, MS; Matthew (Jennifer) Tryon, Holland Patent, NY; Andrew Tryon, Newton, MA; Nathaniel Shuart, Cobleskill, NY; Jennifer (Brandon) Harris, Marcy, NY; Susan Ward, Smithville Flats, NY; Jasmine and Ava Buckley, Moss Point, MS; Jacob and Connie Tibbetts, Lincoln, ME, two great grandchildren: Luna Ward, Smithville Flats, NY; Oliver Tryon, Holland Patent, NY, one brother: Jack (Jean) Ward, Youngsville, NC, and 13 nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are on Wednesday, November 2nd from 9:00-11:00AM at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY, followed by inurnment with military honors at 2:00pm at Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
