Schoharie- Leslie C. Slater, 93, of State Route 30, died Friday, April 29, 2011 at his home, following a brief illness.
Leslie was born on April 17, 1918 in Cobleskill, a son of Lena Mae (Hadsell) and Austin Slater.
Leslie served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 and was in a gun battalion in the Hawaiian and Marshall Islands. He was also a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and spoke to the Daughters of the American Revolution in 2001. For his honorable service, Leslie received the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Leslie was a life member and past-commander of the V.F.W. Post 5088 in Cobleskill.
Leslie worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Schoharie County Highway Department before retiring. He was also a firefighter for the Cobleskill Volunteer Fire Dept. for several years.
Leslie is survived by his wife: Barbara (Griffin) Slater, whom he married Feb. 22, 1981; two daughters: Terri Cousineau of Ballston Spa, Sandra (Rueben) Mickle of Middleburgh; son: Charles (Linda Almay) Slater of Cobleskill; step-children: John Bleuer of Loma Linda, CA.; Rolf Bleuer of Schoharie; Jana Bleuer of Exeter, CA; Craig 9Lynn) Bleuer of Clinton, MA; Eva (Sean) Parker of Buchanan, MI; sister: Kate Jackson of Sharon Springs; a brother: Chester Slater of Cobleskill; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1413 Quackenbush Road, Schenectady, NY 12306. Private burial, with full Military Honors, will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, NY.
