Howes Cave- Larry A. Curthoys, 70, of Sagendorf Corners Road in Howes Cave died Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Samuel Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, NY after a long battle with cancer.
Larry was born April 23, 1941, in Troy, NY and was the son of Leslie A. and Alice (Bashford) Curthoys.
He served in the US Navy from 1959 until his honorable discharge in 1961. He was a 1963 graduate of SUNY-Cobleskill and was awarded an Associate's Degree in Animal Husbandry, was a member of the NRA, National Wild Turkey Federation, NYS Licensed Hunting and Fishing Guide, Avid Outdoorsman and Fisherman, Boy Scout leader, Certified Hunter Safety Training Instructor, volunteered with "Take a Kid Fishing" program, and was a NYS Champion in the Walleye Tournament. He also was a well known columnist with the Daily Gazette, writing about wildlife, fishing and the great outdoors in his "All Outdoors" column.
He was predeceased by a son, Larry, Jr., who died in 1977.
Larry is survived by his wife, Janis Huston Curthoys, whom he married December 17, 1966; two daughters, Michelle Coger of Cobleskill and Melissa (Eric) Shelley of Carlisle; 7 grandchildren, John Coger, Amanda Putnam, Cassandra Compton, Evan & Jillian Coger, Beau & Duke Shelley, nieces and nephews, and was to become a Great Grandfather due in August.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am, on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY with Rev. Donald Klob officiating. Calling hours will be held from 6-8 pm Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.
