Katherine Borst

Seward- Katherine E. Borst, 93, formerly of Seward, died Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Valley Health Services in Herkimer where she had been a resident for the past seven years.

Born December 24, 1919 in Schenectady, she was the daughter of Sanford J. and Lena (Prentice) Empie.

For many years, Katherine was a postmaster at the Seward United States Post Office. She was a member of Zion/St. John's Lutheran Church in Seward, as well as the Lutheran Women's Group. Katherine was also a volunteer with the auxiliary at the former Community Hospital of Schoharie County in Cobleskill.

She married Clarence Borst October 19, 1940 and he predeceased her on March 5, 1998. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Mary Lou Bond, who died March 5, 2010.

Survivors include her daughter: Marlene (Joseph) Popnik of Harrisburg; two grandchildren: Dawn (Stephen) Cooper of Cooper City, FL, and Todd Slater of Davie, FL; one great-granddaughter: Cindy Dumas of Davie, FL; one great-great-granddaughter: Jaida Dejong of Davie, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 7, 2013 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. Officiating will be Rev. Allison Michael of Zion/St. John's Lutheran Church. Family and friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held at the funeral home prior to the service, from 10 to 11 AM. Burial will be in Slate Hill Cemetery, Sharon, NY.
