Middleburgh- Julius "Joe" Katchur, 89, of Wells Ave., died Friday, January 8, 2016 at Baptist Health Nursing and Retirement Center in Scotia where he has been a resident for the past few months.
Born December 23, 1926 in Manhattan, he was the son of John and Esther (Danko) Katchur.
A United States Army veteran, Joe proudly served his country from 1950 until 1952 when he received an honorable discharge. Joe retired from New York Telephone Company, where he was a foreman.
He will be remembered as a dedicated and charitable person to his church and the native-born American Indians. Joe and his wife, Ellen, were active in for many years doing charity work for older people and children on Native American Indian Reservations in Wisconsin, North and South Dakota, and Montana.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church and was also a 4th degree Past Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus.
Ellen predeceased him on January 14, 2007.
He is survived by a sister, Laura Brunacki of Palm Harbor, FL, and many church and Native American friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Main St., Middleburgh.
Friends are also invited to a period of visitation to be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM at Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh. Burial will be Tues. in Calvary Cemetery, Queens.
