Summit- Summit lost an exemplary citizen when Joseph Bocchino passed away suddenly in his home on May 15, 2012. Although born in the Bronx to immigrant parents, Antoinette and Joseph Bocchino, he had always dreamed of living in the country surrounded by nature and wildlife. He found his dream in his spacious home and grounds in Summit, NY.
Joe was a graduate of the Catholic school system in New York and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Fordham University. He taught in Yonkers High Schools for his entire professional career and continued to serve as board chairman of the Yonkers Teachers Federal Credit Union long after he retired from active teaching.
History was his passion and he dedicated his life to inculcating a love and respect in his students for the life lessons only history can teach. He served his country in the United States Navy and kept a strong bond with the veterans and current service members through participation in various veterans' organizations.
As a citizen of Summit, he quickly became involved in a variety of civic activities. He gave generously of his time and talent and was asked to run for town supervisor against a long-serving and well financed opponent. To the surprise of many and the consternation of some, he won the election and was re-elected twice for a total service in that position of twelve years. His tenure was marked by significant improvements in civic services and a particularly successful ability to garner state assistance for local projects.
He is survived by a son, granddaughter, two brothers, and a sister.
Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to the National Museum of American History, 1400 Constitution Ave., Washington, DC 20560.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill and Palmer & Shaylor Funeral Home, 134 River St., Middleburgh.
